FAQ

Our Most Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Your Most Common Questions About Dental Insurance and Co-Payments

1. What is a co-payment?

A co-payment, also called co-insurance, is the portion of the bill that is your own responsibility. It’s the most common way for dental plans to limit their costs. Dental plans provide various options with a mix of benefits and price points for you to choose from.

Some plans also limit spending by setting annual deductibles, capping the total amount covered, or restricting the number of visits covered within a year.

2. How much do I have to pay for my co-payment?

The amount you pay depends on your specific plan.

  • Common co-payment breakdowns:
    • 80-20 co-pay: Your plan covers 80%, and you pay 20%. This is typical for basic procedures like x-rays, cleanings, fillings, and root canals.
    • 50-50 co-pay: Your plan and you each cover 50%. This is common for major procedures like crowns and bridges.

Be sure to review your dental plan for specific details.

3. What should I do if I’m unsure about my dental plan’s coverage?

If you’re unsure about your co-payment responsibilities or coverage, we recommend contacting your insurance provider directly. Our clinic is also happy to help you understand your plan and answer any questions. Feel free to call us or ask during your visit!

4. Can my dentist waive my co-payment?

No, waiving a co-payment is considered insurance fraud and is against the law. Dentists who waive co-payments risk being fined or even losing their license.

When you and your dentist sign the claim form sent to the insurance company, you are confirming the services provided and the total amount charged. The insurance company pays its share based on the assumption that you will pay your portion as well.

5. Does your clinic accept my dental insurance?

We accept most major insurance plans. If you’d like to confirm whether your plan is accepted, please give us a call at (613) 224-5777.

6. What happens if I can’t pay my co-payment right away?

If you’re unable to pay your co-payment at the time of your visit, please let us know as soon as possible. Our clinic may offer payment options or plans to help make your dental care more manageable. However, it’s important to note that co-payments are your responsibility as outlined in your insurance agreement, and timely payment ensures that we can continue providing quality care.

Feel free to contact our office to discuss your situation—we’re here to help!
